About Keighlan Nguyen

Keighlan Nguyen – My Journey Towards Counseling

I was born and raised here in Overland Park, Kansas. My passion for therapy began when I was a teenager and started searching for healing from a chronic struggle with social anxiety. I finally started to see some growth and progress toward a positive change when I began therapy in high school.

I paused my therapy journey when I departed for college to study psychology and sociology. But Covid hit during my college years and brought me right back into the therapy room. This second round of therapy was even more helpful than before, as I started to see real growth and find healing again.

While the therapeutic process has helped me achieve a lot of positive changes in my life with my battle against extreme anxiety, I also believe that God has been with me through it all, carefully guiding my journey in the therapy room. I have also seen God come through for me many times in my life through some of the faith-filled people He has placed in my life, especially through my

church family.

I have been through the hills and valleys throughout my journey, and therapy granted me the space to process it all with a compassionate and supportive therapist who aided me with my mental health.

When I first started therapy as a teen, it gave me a curiosity about the field of counseling. When I returned to therapy in my college years, I became even more inspired to pursue a career as a counselor, having experienced firsthand what therapy can do for a person. I began pursuing a master’s degree in counseling at MidAmerica Nazarene University in 2023. I

completed that journey through graduate school in May 2026.

My Area Of Expertise And Why I Chose It

I work with adults, young adults, couples, teens, children, families, and groups. By applying an experiential, attachment theory, and family systems lens, I help clients to recognize the internalized beliefs and behavioral patterns that perpetuate repetitive cycles, allowing us to focus on effective strategies for achieving lasting change. My specialties include working with relational issues and dynamics, anxiety, depression, issues of self-worth, grief/loss, trauma, and spirituality. I can integrate faith and prayer into the sessions as the client desires. I look forward to meeting with you and helping you along your mental health and faith journey!

During graduate school, I had many opportunities to learn about diverse counseling modalities. While I like to draw on certain theories in the counseling process, I lean toward an experiential approach, as I received more training in this modality during school. I also feel that this approach aligns well with my personality, as I am someone who feels things deeply. I believe there is something very healing for the soul when a person can fully process the emotions they are carrying. I also use attachment theory, primarily because understanding the dynamics of attachment figure relationships, as well as the emotional wounds people can suffer in relationships, can be eye-opening. By using these counseling methods, I am dedicated to helping individuals through a Christian lens as they walk through the hills and valleys of their personal stories.

How I Approach Therapy

I approach therapy experientially, unstructured, and client-centered, tailoring treatment to the specific goals we establish collaboratively. My work is attachment-based and trauma-informed. Some of the modalities I utilize in the therapy room include AEDP, EFT, mindfulness, and experiential treatment.

What is Unique About How I Approach Counseling

I have been through the hills and valleys throughout my journey, and therapy granted me the space to process it all with a compassionate and supportive therapist who aided me with my mental health. I take into account not just you as a whole person, but also all the parts of your story that have brought you to where you are today.

What I Am Like Outside Of The Office

Despite the challenges of my journey, I try daily to find beauty and whimsy in my life. I enjoy being out in nature, but also engaging with different forms of art such as books, movies, music, etc. I love looking for God and his beauty in everything. I also greatly value quality time with my sisters and my husband.
